Classic Apple Crumble

Classic Apple Crumble


  • 6 Bramley apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 100g granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 200g plain flour
  • 100g unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • A pinch of salt
  • Vanilla custard or ice cream, for serving


  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F)
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, 50g of granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg. Toss the apples to coat them evenly with the sugar and spices
  3. Place the apple mixture into a baking dish, spreading it out evenly
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the plain flour, remaining 50g of granulated sugar, cold cubed butter, and a pinch of salt
  5. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. This will take a few minutes.
  6. Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the apples in the baking dish
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes or until the crumble topping is golden brown, and the apple filling is bubbling
  8. Remove from the oven and allow it to cool for a few minutes
  9. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla custard or a scoop of your favourite ice cream
